Crime Increases, Citizens Desire Safety

In the last four years, there has been a continual rise in the number of crimes committed in the city of New Orleans. A new survey shows that New Orleans residents think the city isn’t safe and the crime is getting worse.

Of those surveyed, 74% percent feel that crime in New Orleans has gotten worse over the past year and 64% don’t feel safe. The idea that the city is safe has dropped by 23 points among blacks and 20 points among whites. It dropped 23 points in the Lakeview-Mid-city area, 19 points in the Uptown- Garden District area, 15 points in Gentilly/9th Ward area and 33 points in New Orleans and 25 points in Algiers.

Criminals in New Orleans are committing violent crimes daily. New Orleans has been labelled as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. Criminals have gotten bolder and don’t seem to care what time or day they are committing their crimes. The murder rate in New Orleans continues to rise. Young children and young adults account for most of the victims and perpetrators of violent crimes. Recently, there has been a surge in car-jackings within the city. Car break-ins and burglaries account for a major portion of the crimes committed.

The citizens of New Orleans are not without avenues for help, however. In order to take an active role in fighting violent crimes in our city, citizens may report anything suspicious to Crimestoppers at 1-877-903-STOP. If the danger feels imminent, contact the police when it is merited. Make sure that cars and valuables are safely secured. These simple steps may help stem the tide of crime in the city of New Orleans.
