Will Covid Cases Rise After Removal of Restrictions in New Orleans?

By L. Jasmine

After much back and forth, the city of New Orleans dropped the mask mandate in total. The city also dropped a requirement that people show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to enter restaurants and other establishments.

Cases throughout the city have remained low in recent weeks. The city was averaging 17 new cases per day with a 1.7 percent test positivity rate. At this rate, many are hoping things might really and truly get back to normal.

Schools have also seen restrictions rescinded. Additional rules placed during the Omicron surge, such as restricted use of gathering places and increased social separation, were also relaxed on Monday, according to the district. To meet federal and state guidelines, the isolation period for adults and children who test positive for COVID has been decreased from 10 to 5 days.

With evidence of yet another viral surge on its way as cases rise in other parts of the country and world, it will be interesting to see how the city fares without the restrictions we’ve become accustomed to.
